ONI’s Ishikawadai denim is another special fabric from the brand that highlights their obsession with old machinery and unconventional texture. The name comes from the Ishikawadai Seisakujo ring-spinning machine used to produce the yarn, a vintage piece of equipment dating back to 1953. Unlike modern spinning machines, the Ishikawadai operates at roughly a third of the speed, allowing the cotton to retain far more of its natural irregularity. The result is yarn with a raw, uneven character that translates directly into the finished denim.
That texture interacts beautifully with ONI’s signature green-cast “secret” indigo, creating a fabric that feels distinctly vintage from the first wear. The uneven yarn structure absorbs the dye in a way that emphasizes the highs and lows of the fabric, setting the stage for dynamic fading as the denim breaks in. It has that immediate sense of character you’d normally expect from well-worn vintage pieces, and it only develops more depth as it ages.
At 15oz, this version lands in a versatile weight that works especially well for the season, while still maintaining ONI’s signature low-tension weave and robust hand. The relaxed weave keeps the fabric lively and textured without sacrificing durability. We were especially excited to see this release in the cinch-back version, a detail that adds a strong dose of historical character and feels perfectly matched to the vintage spirit of the Ishikawadai fabric.
